Lisa Markley's concert (with her talented husband Bruce Balmer) was a great way to finish out 2009. Thanks to all who came and enjoyed an intimate evening of great music to close out the year.
We've got two events planned for January. The first will be an open house for all our friends (Magpie attendees and others) to come and meet Laurel and to have a visit. We don't have a date for that just yet.
The other event is a visit from a Song School friend of mine from Boston. Teresa Storch is a performer well-known in that highly-talented area, although I believe this is her first visit out here to Utah as a performer.
Teresa is not Laurel's twin, although she too started in Omaha and then moved to Colorado for college. Unlike Laurel, she then moved to Boston, and began a career as a singer-songwriter that has received broad acclaim for both her recorded albums and her live performances; these have garnered her (among other awards) 3rd place in the Solar Fest 2008 competition, 'honorable mention' in the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Songwriter's Showcase Competition in 2003 and selection as part of the “Boston’s Best Singer/Songwriters” Showcase for 2003.
As I said, I met her at Song School, and I can say that she has a fabulous voice, a very powerful driving guitar style, and the ability to turn a nice phrase, both in words and in music.
Here's some of what other folks are saying about Teresa:
"Infuses contemporary singer/songwriter with traditional folk vibe. It's no wonder she's being recognized in her genre."
—Soundcheck Magazine"She inhabits her songs so fully you can't help but be pulled into her world."
— Boston Herald writer Daniel Gewertz
"Mesmerizing vocal riffs...fantastic folk-rock sound."
— Northeast Performer
"One of the most inventive writers and solid performers of the current crop of singer/songwriters coming out of Boston. [She] makes me proud to be one."
— veteran singer/songwriter (and Magpie Alum) Vance Gilbert
I am really looking forward to having her come to visit and play.
It's a Saturday, so the door will open at 7:00 pm, and music will start at about 7:30 pm.
Suggested per person donation is $15 (all of which goes to Teresa) and I know that she will have her CDs available for purchase (in case you don't have them already) so that you can take the music home with you or share it with friends. As usual, there'll be the famous limeade (and possibly some unadulterated eggnog), but if you'd rather something different or stronger, you're welcome to bring a beverage of your choice. I also encourage you to bring a munchie to share at intermission — people have brought (and bring!) some amazing things!
We hope you can join us - let us know, so we can save you a seat. You can do this by sending an email to concerts@magpiehouseconcerts.com or give us a call at (801) 487-5552 to reserve your space.

Mailings
Many people have asked that we let them know about other house concerts or similar events, and so we've decided to give it a try. However, we're both very mindful of how much unwanted email all of us get, day in and day out, and don't want to contribute to that onslaught in the slightest. So, if you'd rather only get announcements only about the Magpie House Concerts series, please let us know, and we'll promptly take care of it. (And just to help you decide, we can assure you that we will not be sending out more than one extra announcement a month, and often not even that much.)
If you are on our mailing list, you will hear about things first; so if you are not, why not sign up now? We promise not to spam you or let anyone else know your address. And if you know someone else who'd be interested, of course, please pass the word along.
You can do this by clicking here to subscribe directly, or by sending an email asking to be added to concerts@magpiehouseconcerts.com.
