Next at the Nest:
John LillySaturday, March 13thTime: 7:00 PM Door | ![]() |
Well wasn't that a lovely evening with Bob Sima and David Glaser. We had over a dozen people and a great time.
Next up is a bit different, an experiment in many ways. This will be an evening with John Lilly of the Folklore Society of America. John is a multi-talented acoustic music performer from Charleston, West Virginia, and he brings to life a singer-songwriter area that we don’t often hear at Magpie: Americana, country roots, and traditional folk music. I had a chance to see him at Folk Alliance in Memphis, and I can safely say that if you like the older styles of folk music, including great storytelling in the western tradition, John is a must-see. He writes new songs that sound as old as the hills, and performs older songs like they were made yesterday. According to one reviewer, “If Hank Williams had a sunny disposition, he’d be John Lilly.”
So if that's something that piques your interest, please do come, as I know it will be a great time. I've already been getting reservations from folks who are particular fans of John, and I would like for as many people as possible to get to hear his music.
As always, the suggested donation is $15, all of which goes to the artist, and all of these are at the usual place.
As the concert is on a Saturday, the door will open at 7:00 pm, and the music and stories will start at about 7:30 pm.
Suggested per person donation is $15 (all of which goes to John) and there will be CDs available for purchase (in case you don't have them already) so that you can take the music home with you or share it with friends. As usual, there'll be the famous limeade, but if you'd rather something different and/or stronger, you are welcome to bring it. We also have a "sharing table" for munchies before the show, during intermission, and afterwards – so bring whatever finger foods you and others will enjoy!
We hope you can join us - let us know, so we can save you a seat. You can do this by sending an email to concerts@magpiehouseconcerts.com or give us a call at (801) 487-5552 to reserve your space.
Grant and Laurel, your bright-eyed hosts (and as always, Susanne in memory)
Magpie House Concerts, the home of bright & shiny music!
PS: Don't forget about our third concert on Saturday March 27th, and featuring the one and only Eric Schwartz! A rare talent and a good friend, he will be doing a show that will *not* be suitable for children or the local ward. It will be one that will cause you to laugh yourself breathless, and shake your head in wonderment. I’m sure he’s human; I’m just not sure what kind of human. He writes some of the funniest and most moving songs in the folk/blues/singer-songwriter world today. I can guarantee you will not forget the man or the performance. I’ll be sending a reminder out about his evening closer to the date as well, but we are already getting reservations.Time: Saturday March 13th at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm.
Address: RSVP to get the address.
Phone: 801.487.5552
Cost: $15 suggested donation, all of which goes to the performer.
They will have CDs for sale as well, so make sure to save some cash for them!
What to bring: There will be (as usual) limeade, but if you wish something stronger or different you are welcome to bring a beverage of your choice.
A snack to share at intermission is always appreciated as well.
RSVP: Reserve your spot by email or by calling 801.487.5552.
Mailings
Many people have asked that we let them know about other house concerts or similar events, and so we've decided to give it a try. However, we're both very mindful of how much unwanted email all of us get, day in and day out, and don't want to contribute to that onslaught in the slightest. So, if you'd rather only get announcements only about the Magpie House Concerts series, please let us know, and we'll promptly take care of it. (And just to help you decide, we can assure you that we will not be sending out more than one extra announcement a month, and often not even that much.)
If you are on our mailing list, you will hear about things first; so if you are not, why not sign up now? We promise not to spam you or let anyone else know your address. And if you know someone else who'd be interested, of course, please pass the word along.
You can do this by clicking here to subscribe directly, or by sending an email asking to be added to concerts@magpiehouseconcerts.com.
